Myanmar will prioritize restoring stability before holding elections, junta chief Min Aung Hlaing said a day after the military government extended the country’s state of emergency for another six months until February 1, 2023.
The regime will prioritize improving the country’s public security system and restoring law and order to hold free and fair elections, Min Aung Hlaing said Monday in a televised speech on state broadcaster MRTV. Myanmar also needs time to reform its electoral system to improve the representation of ethnic parties in parliament, he added.
He said the lack of security and stability was also making it difficult to implement a 5-point agenda laid out for the country by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN last year. The military leader gave no time-line for when elections would be held.
The comments follow Acting President Myint Swe’s statement Sunday, approving the military chief’s request for an emergency extension at the National Defense and Security Council meeting in the capital Naypyidaw.
