The first ever genuine Star Wars drones are official and despite not going on sale until the fall and currently not being available to US
fans even to reserve, the buzz they’re creating can be heard in a galaxy far, far away.
Built by Propel and called ‘Battle Quads’ rather than drones, the range will launch with a choice of four models: a Millennium Falcon; a T-65 X-Wing Starfighter; a 74-Z Speeder Bike; and a Tie Advanced X1.
As well as being hand-finished and painted to ensure they meet Star Wars fans’ extremely high-flying expectations, every drone will come with a certificate of authenticity, an individual serial number and what Propel describes as “a collectable display box.”
However, they don’t simply look the part — the likeness to the ‘real’ spaceships and speeders from the film series has been achieved in part by cleverly ‘hiding’ each device’s propellers so that they really don’t look like drones — the drones should
be able to fly at speeds of up to 35mph (they can accelerate from rest to 30mph in under three seconds)
and more impressively, get into real-life dog fights or laser battles with each other.
Propel says that up to 24 drones will be able to fight each other at any one time. And that could be a very expensive battle indeed considering that the drones are going to cost between $200 and $300 each. But for that large outlay, as well as getting something genuinely collectable, fans are going to get a genuinely good drone.
