And finally Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States on Friday, becoming commander-in- chief of a riven nation facing uncertainty under a leader who had never held before any political office or high military rank.
In his inaugural speech, which lasted for about 16 minutes, Trump painted a bleak picture of America, which echoed what he harped on throughout his election campaign— rigged system, dishonest media, drugs, crime, poverty and lack of bold action. He promised to stir a ‘new national pride’ and protect America from the ‘ravages’ of countries he says have stolen US jobs.
Trump sketched a vision of ‘American carnage.’ Then he promised to end it with a nationalist ‘America First’ approach to governing. It was a speech for Trump’s supporters, but may be not for those who voted for somebody else. Before the inaugural balls, Trump went directly to the Oval Office and signed his first executive order as president — on ‘Obamacare.’
Trump also formally approved two former generals confirmed to Cabinet posts earlier by the Senate: James Mattis as secretary of defense and John Kelly to head the Department of Homeland Security. Vice President Mike Pence swore them in soon after. Mattis chose a different tone from his boss in his first statement to his department: “Recognizing that no nation is secure without friends, we will work with the State Department to strengthen our alliances.â€
The crowd at Trump inauguration was notably smaller than the previous inaugurals, a reflection of business tycoon’s divisive presidential campaign and his unpopularity, who is the oldest person to be sworn in as president.
Trump’s call for restrictive immigration measures, religious screening of immigrants and his caustic campaign rhetoric about women and minorities angered millions. He offered scant outreach to those who did not line up behind his candidacy, instead offering a call to ‘speak our minds openly, debate our disagreements honestly, but always pursue solidarity.’
After the swearing ceremony, huge number of protesters descended on Washington streets. Police in riot gear deployed pepper spray after protesters burnt vehicles, smashed the windows of downtown businesses while denouncing capitalism and the new president.
If anyone was expecting an evolution from Donald Trump the candidate to Donald Trump the president, was grossly mistaken. The new president delivered an inaugural address that was straight from his campaign script — to the delight or dismay of different subsets of Americans.
Trump speech was like both a lamentation of ‘halcyon days’, and a longing to get that back, as he pledged to make ‘America Great Again.’ But it was short on specifics for how he will solve those problems.
“America will start winning again, winning like never before,†the new president said. “We will bring back our jobs. We will bring back our borders. We will bring back our wealth. And we will bring back our dreams.â€
It was just like a nostalgic outburst and nothing more than that. It lacked substance. It was neither discreet nor concrete as far as the pressing global issues are concerned. It grossly lacked the vision for a future America. It was more like us versus them, mainly served the domestic audience, rather than for a wider world. He failed to mention an objective and multi-faceted vision, and only offered one-sided vision to the American public.
It was not an inaugural address by somebody who is going to take the mantle of world leadership. It was not a speech to rally and unite people. It was, again, more bluster. And it is evident from Trump’s inauguration address that he intends to govern just as he campaigned.
