Adnoc is developing and empowering top Emirati legal talent within the company through the Adnoc Legal Development Institute (ALDI), a comprehensive programme aimed at offering world-class legal qualifications and work experience.
The structured, hands-on training programme, which began in January 2024, supports Adnoc’s broader strategy to foster a knowledge-based economy in the UAE and nurture best-in-class UAE national talent through its various
educational initiatives.
As the UAE reinforces its position as a global hub for business and commerce, the need for highly qualified legal professionals has never been greater.
ALDI stands at the forefront of this effort, offering a comprehensive legal education designed to meet the highest global standards.
“In line with the vision of the UAE leadership and under the guidance of Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Adnoc’s Managing Director and GCEO, Adnoc continues to nurture and empower Emirati talent to drive the nation’s growth and prosperity,” said Marwan Naim Nijmeh, Adnoc’s Chief Legal Officer.
He added, “ALDI supports these efforts and is providing an important platform to develop the next generation of Emirati legal professionals. Fundamentally, our people remain our most valuable asset and we will continue to prioritise their development.”
The programme welcomes both recent graduates and professionals, giving participants the opportunity to pursue prestigious certifications such as the UK Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) and the New York Bar Exam.
Currently, eight UAE Nationals are enrolled, with five high-performing Emirati students currently on their way to obtaining their SQE qualifications at the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) Academy.
ALDI covers foundational UAE and English law, alongside practical skills such as contract drafting, negotiation, and legal planning. Adnoc has tailored the curriculum to ensure that participants not only master the technical aspects of the law but also gain the commercial acumen necessary to thrive in the legal teams of one of the world’s largest companies.
Cohort members will gain international exposure, broadening their legal skills and equipping them with the skills needed to excel on a global stage.
After completing their placements, participants return to Adnoc to continue their development as fully qualified legal counsel. By 2027, Adnoc anticipates its first cohort of dual-qualified lawyers will rejoin the company, ready to navigate the complexities of international legal frameworks.
Beyond strengthening Adnoc’s internal legal expertise, ALDI is also contributing to the UAE’s broader legal landscape. By nurturing a new generation of highly skilled Emirati lawyers, the programme helps to deepen the local talent pool and reduces the country’s reliance on foreign legal professionals.
“This programme is not just about legal education; it’s about building the UAE’s legal future,” said ALDI cohort member Mariam Al Ameri. “It’s empowering to know that I’m part of a programme that’s shaping the next generation of legal experts in the UAE.”
ALDI also engages with schools and universities across the country to identify promising young talent through academic roadshows and partnerships. This ensures a strong pipeline of Emirati talent remains strong for years to come.
