2016 was a generous year in terms of celebrity beauty, with fans treated to more than one daring red carpet look. Here are some of the most striking.
ALICIA KEYS, MTV VMAS: Singer Alicia Keys wins the awards for the boldest beauty move of 2016, hands down. In June, the star wrote an essay titled “Alicia Keys: Time to Uncover,†in which she talked about the pressure on women to feel “skinny, or desirable, or perfect†& explored going makeup free. Later that summer she rocked up to the MTV VMAs completely bare-faced, and hasn’t looked back since.
KRISTEN STEWART, CANNES FEST: Kristen Stewart shook off her grungy red carpet style at Cannes in the spring, opting for a full-on bombshell smoky eye, deep red lip and blonde bob.
BLAKE LIVELY, CANNES: Another star shaking up their look on the French Riviera was Blake Lively, who swapped her polished chignons and updos for a messy ponytail that sat low, with loose strands pulled out to frame her face and shoulders.
ELLE FANNING, MET GALA: Elle Fanning put a super-slick spin on the ponytail with this straight, sleek, high-fashion version, which the actress debuted at the MET Gala.
NINA DOBREV, MUSIC AWARDS: Model and actress Nina Dobrev stole the show when she jazzed up her braids with contrasting colors for extra impact at the American Music Awards.
OLIVIA MUNN, OSCARS: Actress Olivia Munn jumped on the trend for orange lipstick when attending the Oscars, with a bold tangerine shade that perfectly matched her gown.
DAKOTA JOHNSON, BAFTAS: Another star to make a splash with a bold lip was Dakota Johnson, who teamed her choppy fringe and spaghetti strap gown with a glossy post-box red hue.
KATY PERRY, MET GALA: Katy Perry turned to her own CoverGirl makeup range for the MET Gala, rocking ‘Katy Kat Matte Lipstick in Perry Panther’ black gothic lipstick for a dark spin.
TAYLOR SWIFT, MET GALA: Incidentally, Perry’s alleged rival Taylor Swift was also rocking a dark lip on the same red carpet, as well as her recently-lightened choppy peroxide bob, making for a much rockier look than usual.
JANELLE MONAE, FILM AWARDS: Janelle Monae showed us how to nail old-school silver screen perfection with a glamorous fire-engine-red lip, false lashes and statement diamond earrings for Hollywood Film Awards.
