Billionaire Carlos Slim led a consortium that won one of the runway contracts for Mexico City’s new airport, as the government handed out the first big awards for the $13 billion construction project.
A unit of Slim’s Grupo Carso SAB — along with partners GIA+A, Promotora y Desarrolladora Mexicana and La Peninsular Cia. Constructora — submitted a bid of 7.4 billion pesos ($398 million) to build the airport’s third runway, a government task force said Friday. Mexican companies Coconal and Constructora y Pavimentadora Vise won the second runway with a bid of 7.93 billion pesos, beating out groups including Promotora y Operadora de Infraestructura SAB and defaulted builder Empresas ICA SAB. The right to build Runway 1 will be auctioned at a future date.
The airport is the biggest public works project of President Enrique Pena Nieto’s administration. Originally planned to open in 2020, it’s behind schedule with tenders for construction projects such as a terminal building able to handle 50 million passengers a year and the control tower. Winners of those projects are set to be announced in the coming months.
