HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union (GWU), Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF) and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, has stressed the need to establish an effective mechanism to develop sustainable means of communication, while maintaining a safe internet environment.
The changes that occurred in the use of the internet, including social media platforms, require a safe environment where everybody would be made aware of the best way to use them, she noted on the occasion of Safer Internet Day 2017.
She called for initiatives and constant follow-ups to guide the future generations on internet risks, in addition to developing special curricula for internet safety. Parents should be aware of how to use the internet so that they can guide their children, she explained.
The GWU is a key partner with the competent authorities in the country in their efforts to get a unified model for the safe use of the internet, she added.
It is the responsibility of the Emirati women to guide their children so that they do not fall prey to the false news or messages posted on social media platforms, she asserted. It is their responsibility to monitor their sons and daughters, especially children, she added.
The journey of the GWU has been filled with activities and programmes that aimed to empower women in the field of technology, especially information technology and computers, Sheikha Fatima remarked.
She also emphasised the initiatives that were undertaken to empower the women and children in programming, and raising their awareness about the risks of the use of the internet, while also focussing on
advanced science.
