Ophelia takes aim at Ireland

The remnants of Ophelia, the most eastern major Atlantic storm on record, are set to batter Ireland with “extreme” conditions on Monday, leading the government to warn of potential flooding in the south and urging schools to stay closed.
Ophelia weakened to a category 1 hurricane and is expected to turn into a strong post-tropical cyclone by Sunday night, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in a bulletin at 4 pm London time.
The storm, about 635 miles east-northeast of the Azores, comes 30 years after the remnants of another Atlantic hurricane brought some of the most destructive weather in the UK’s history.
Ophelia has maximum sustained winds of 95 mph, according to the NHC. It is expected to bring gale-force winds to southern Ireland by early Monday and hurricane-force winds by the afternoon.
