ECB’s Rimsevics detained by Latvian anti-graft bureau

Latvian central bank Governor Ilmars Rimsevics was detained by the country’s anti-corruption bureau, the prime minister said in a statement on Sunday.
The government has full trust in the work of the anti-graft body and won’t interfere in its work, according to the statement sent by the office of Premier Maris Kucinskis. No further details on the reason for the detention were provided.
The governor’s office and private property were searched, state-owned LTV reported, without saying how it obtained the information. Rimsevics spent more than eight hours at the anti-corruption bureau in Riga with his lawyer, Saulvedis Varpins. He was then taken away in the bureau’s van in early hours on Sunday. Repeated calls and text messages sent to his lawyer were unanswered.
The governor has led the Baltic nation’s central bank since 2001 and has been a member of the European Central Bank governing council since 2014, when the Baltic country adopted the euro.
The Finance Ministry is scheduled to hold a news conference at 3 p.m. in Riga and the cabinet will meet on Monday for an extraordinary session. Rimsevics’ detention poses no risk to the country’s financial system, the premier said in the statement.
