French fashion house Dior has unveiled the advertising campaign for its spring/summer 2017 collection, the first ready-to-wear line overseen by new creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri. In the spirit of the catwalk show, which previewed the collection
in September, the Italian designer’s feminist values play a key role in
the project, designed by, with and
for women.
The eagerly awaited Dior spring/summer 2017 show caused a sensation back in September, when the fashion world discovered the label’s first collection from Maria Grazia Chiuri, the first female creative director in the history of the French fashion house. And the Italian designer didn’t disappoint, with a collection of pieces steeped in feminist values, shifting between sportswear inspirations — notably from the world of fencing — and romantic, sensual silhouettes.

A WIDER PROJECT CELEBRATING FEMALE TALENT
The campaign for this spring/summer 2017 collection reflects this spirit, putting women — and, in particular, Dior femininity — firmly in the spotlight. The SS17 campaign shots are, in fact, part of a wider project called “The Woman Behind the Lens,” which Dior describes as a corpus of photographs taken exclusively by women.
For this first campaign of the Maria Grazia Chiuri era, Dior teamed with French photographer Brigitte Lacombe, known for her intimate celebrity portraits and for collaborations with the world’s leading fashion magazines.
In a Dior statement, Brigitte Lacombe said she was honored and grateful to be chosen by Maria Grazia Chiuri to photograph her first collection for Dior. She also concluded
that working with her on the spring/summer 2017 campaign had been a highly positive experience. She describes the Dior creative director as “strong, direct, open and generous. [She has] a very clear idea about how women should be portrayed and looked at, which is a point of view that I share and understand.”
The Italian designer picked two female models to showcase the sporty and sensual pieces in the SS17 collection, with Ruth Bell — who opened the runway show in September — starring alongside her twin sister, May Bell. The two young women, both with their own distinct styles, can be seen sporting an embroidered tulle dress, a tailored suit and an ensemble inspired by fencing.
The fashion world is now keen to see what’s in store from the Italian designer’s next collection. In any case, there’s no doubt that this is the dawn of a new era for Dior.
