The White House state dinner on Thursday shone the spotlight, not only on Canada’s royal family and head of state, but on a pair of Canadian-born designers who dressed First Lady Michelle Obama and Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau.
The First Lady chose a floral jacquard gown from longtime favorite designer Jason Wu, while Trudeau chose a slim fitting purple gown with peach detailing by Lucian Matis of Toronto. Trudeau is said to be making a concerted effort to don outfits created by Canadian designers to showcase local talent.
Matis also designed the pink and red knee-length dress Trudeau wore earlier in the day. Wu catapulted to fame after FLOTUS chose to don his dresses for her husband’s presidential inauguration ceremonies.
