Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, visited the Bee’ah Waste Management Centre (BWMC) in Al Saj’ah. The Minister was accompanied by Essa Al Hashimi, Acting Under-Secretary Assistant for Environmental Affairs, Yousef Al-Ahmad Al Raisi, Director of Waste Management, and a number of officials from the ministry.
Al Zeyoudi was received by Salim Al Owais, Chairman of Bee’ah, Riyadh Aylan, Director-General of Sharjah Municipality, Khaled Al Huraimel, Group CEO of Bee’ah, and Fahad Shehail, Chief Development Officer, along with top officials from Sharjah Municipality and Bee’ah.
During his tour, the Minister of Climate Change and Environment was briefed on the state-of-the-art facilities of the centre, the first of its kind in the Middle East, and the cutting-edge technologies used by the company to achieve its goals of zero-waste-to-landfill.
He stressed the importance of strengthening the role of federal and local authorities in jointly driving growth and striving to achieve the UAE’s Vision 2021, by creating innovative initiatives and projects that pave the way for a new era of environmental sustainability. He added that the ministry enacts the laws that regulate waste management and promote community awareness on waste reduction and reuse.
He praised the efforts made by Bee’ah and its partners to find sustainable solutions for waste collection and treatment, which contribute to the provision of comprehensive and integrated environmental services based on innovative and environmentally friendly solutions in waste collection, sorting and recycling to serve the interest of community and keep the environment clean.
As part of the visit, Bee’ah presented the impressive model and plans for its new headquarters, designed by the globally renowned architect, Zaha Hadid. Its innovative design, inspired by sand formations created by the wind’s movement and direction, addresses advanced environmental solutions in terms of structure, work environment and visitor-staff interactivity. Fully powered by renewable energy, the building will be an icon for sustainability in the UAE.
Speaking on the occasion, Salim bin Mohammed Al Owais, Chairman of Bee’ah, said, “We are delighted with the visit of the minister to the waste management centre in Sharjah, which created an opportunity to familiarise him with the advanced standards of innovation embraced by Bee’ah in waste management and recycling operations, and update him about our existing and forthcoming projects, which aim to ensure a healthy and safe environment for the communities in which we operate. We hope this visit will help strengthen mutual cooperation, launch more new projects and exchange experiences in the environmental field.”
