The European Commission said it’s the UK’s fault that Brexit negotiators are taking a break in the middle of the current round of talks.
“The timing of talks depends on the availability of our UK partners and I think that explains where we stand, in terms of presence, who speaks to whom and how these negotiations advance,†European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas told reporters in Brussels on Tuesday. “Our teams our available 24/7.â€
The current monthly round of negotiations started in Brussels and will conclude on Thursday but, unusually, no talks are scheduled for Wednesday. UK Brexit Secretary David Davis met his EU counterpart Michel Barnier over lunch on Tuesday, dining on sea bass, Angus beef and French and English wines.
The current negotiations, which are touching on the UK’s financial settlement, the rights of EU citizens in the UK and the Irish border, are the last before EU leaders assess progress at a summit next week.
