Police arrested a man they suspect was the driver who rammed his car into a group of soldiers patrolling in the Paris suburb of Levallois-Perret on Wednesday morning, Agence France-Presse reported. The Paris prosecutor opened an anti-terrorism probe into the incident.
The suspected driver was wounded during the arrest early Wednesday afternoon on the A16 highway to the northern port of Calais, AFP said, citing unnamed sources. Six military personnel were hurt in the attack, three of them seriously, though their lives are not in danger, the Defense Ministry said in a separate statement. Interior Minister Bertrand Collomb visited the wounded at a hospital.
The soldiers were deployed as part of Operation Sentinelle, a domestic anti-terrorism plan which will remain in place as long as it is useful, Armed Forces Minister Florence Parly said earlier this week. Since January 2015, more than 200 people have been killed in several terrorist attacks throughout the country. The armed forces have been targeted 10 times, according to AFP.
Recent attacks have targeted armed forces. Anti-terrorism prosecutors opened two investigations earlier this year after separate attacks on the Champs-Elysees.
