Sharjah Charity International donated AED4 million for the relief campaign targeting vulnerable people in Somalia, under the slogan “For You Somalia”, which aims to eliminate suffering caused by the drought crisis affecting large areas of the country. The campaign is an implementation of the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in co-operation with the Emirates Red Crescent, ERC, and all UAE charity
organisations and foundations.
Abdullah Mubarak Al Dukhan, Secretary-General of Sharjah Charity International, said that AED1.5 million was allocated to the relief campaign, in response to the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, reflecting the spirit of international co-operation led by the UAE, to relieve affected people suffering from successive crises. A further AED2.5 million was also allocated as emergency aid, distributed by a delegation of the organisation to vulnerable Somali people, in co-ordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the UAE Embassy in Mogadishu, with donations from the organisation currently
totalling AED4 million.
He stressed that the role of the organisation not only involves the campaign’s financial support, but it also supports affected people in the north and south of Somalia, since its inception 28 years ago by its founder, H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, as a donor organisation that provides assistance both inside and outside the UAE. He also noted that a relief caravan was directly employed, including a delegation from the organisation that was sent to distribute urgent aid, such as food and clothing, and provide medicine and treatments for patients, especially those infected with cholera caused by the drought in the north and south of the country, as well as clean water to combat the drought in Somalia.
He added that the UAE is on high alert to prepare and support the “For You Somalia” campaign, with the co-operation of all national charity organisations and the participation of the public and private sectors, reflecting the success of the goals of the Year of Giving initiative. He also stressed that Sharjah Charity International strongly supports the wise leadership in saving and supporting underprivileged populations around the world.
He further highlighted that the UAE’s first position in humanitarian giving for the fourth consecutive time reflects the sincerity of its giving, stressing that the UAE gives without waiting for something in return, as the wise leadership was raised on social solidarity and promoting the values of giving by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
