French start-up Gaspard has developed a connected intelligent liner pad, which uses a system of sensors to help prevent pressure sores for wheelchair users, people of reduced mobility or patients hospitalized for long periods of time.
Morgan Lavaux, the 29-year-old entrepreneur who developed this innovative product, was himself the victim of an accident that left him paraplegic. Now, the young inventor is heading to CES 2017 in Las Vegas early in January to present his product. After a four-year period of hospitalization, Morgan Lavaux has experienced the pain of pressure sores first hand. These localized injuries to the skin caused by pressure and friction are associated with mobility loss. They can also lead to ulcers.
To tackle the problem, Morgan Lavaux had the idea of creating a connected insert, called “Gaspard,†to be placed underneath the pressure-relief cushion of a wheelchair. This smart liner can warn the person or their caregivers if they are poorly positioned in the chair by sending an alert to a dedicated smartphone app.
