Omafen ‘tablets’ withdrawn

DUBAI / WAM

The Ministry of Health and Prevention on Thursday ordered the withdrawal of three batches of Omafen 400mg Tab from the UAE markets after small pieces of aluminium were found in some tablets produced by Oman’s National Pharmaceutical Industries (NPI).
An administrative circular form the ministry called for removal of three batches 0514005, 051006 and 0513011 of Omafen 400mg Tab, an anti-inflammatory and pain-killing drug.
The action was taken after the ministry was alerted by the Directorate General of Pharmaceuticals and Drugs Affairs in the Sultanate of Oman, Dr Amin Hussein Al Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary for Public Health Policy and Licencensing at the ministry.
“We draw attention of the public that the Omani health ministry has stopped distribution of some batches of the drug that shall be sent back to the dealer as they were found to have been physically non-compliant and contained small pieces of aluminium in the tablets,” Amiri added.
Amiri said that other batches of the same drug are safe to use and noted that there are a number of alternatives to the withdrawn drug.
