Sleep apnea is a common chronic disorder affecting about 2-4% of the adult population with highest prevalence in middle aged men. Prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea is very high in Dubai and Middle east according to recent studies.
Sleep apnea can affect anyone at any age, even children. Most of the patients are male, obese and with moderate or severe obstructive sleep apnea.
People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times. This means the brain and the rest of the body may not get enough oxygen.
If left untreated, sleep apnea can increase the risk of health problems, including: high blood pressure, stroke, heart failure, irregular heart beats, and heart attacks, diabetes, depression, worsening of ADHD and headaches.
In addition, untreated sleep apnea may be responsible for poor performance in everyday activities, such as at work and school, road traffic accidents, and academic underachievement in children and adolescents.

Surgery for sleep apnea
Upper airway interventions are directed at the area which is responsible for snoring and sleep apnea. These procedures are endoscopic and minimally invasive in nature; done through natural orifices like nose or oral cavity. Cuts and stitching on skin are thus avoided which enables a cosmetically more acceptable and fast recovery.
