Mercedes-Benz has become the first automotive company to bring active safety systems to its commercial vehicles.
The new Mercedes-Benz Actros trucks for cross-continental haulage is the first with active pedestrian and cyclist detection technology.
With the new Sideguard Assist, when behind the wheel of the sometimes huge rig, drivers will be alerted to pedestrians or cyclists at road corners or junctions — the places where over half of accidents involving trucks and pedestrians occur.
However, thanks to a system Mercedes is calling Active Brake Assist 4, the truck will also be able to autonomously apply the brakes if it senses a pedestrian walking out into its path — say from between two parked cars.
