French power demand jumps to six-week high

French electricity demand jumped to a six-week high as the nation began to ease restrictions on travel, business and schools as deaths from coronavirus continued to recede.
Appetite for power in Italy and Germany continued to rise, leaving the UK, where coronavirus-related restrictions are slowly starting to lift, on its own with consumption falling week-on-week.
A pickup in demand is the first sign that life is returning to normal and that a recovery is underway after weeks of government-imposed lockdowns to try and control the spread of the virus. The speed of the comeback will tell a lot about the damage to Europe’s economy.
Across the European Union power consumption rose 1.9% week-on-week through last week, according to data compiled by Finnish energy technology company Wartsila Oyj.
