His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, on Wednesday inaugurated the Solar Decathlon Middle East (SDME 2018).
Held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Seih Al Dahal in Dubai, the event is organised by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), from November 14-28.
Sheikh Ahmed toured the competition site, accompanied by Matar Al Tayer and Saeed Al Tayer. They viewed the smart and sustainable homes, which have been designed and built by 15 teams representing 28 universities from 11 countries around the world.
Saeed Al Tayer said, “This year’s competition is particularly important as it takes place during the Year of Zayed, which marks 100 years since the birth of our Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, a man of the environment and a pioneer of sustainability.
Al Tayer noted that over the next two weeks, the jury will evaluate the houses, which will be available to the public to visit and meet the university teams. Visitors will have the chance to learn more about the innovative methods and technologies that are reducing the environmental impact of these houses, which have been designed to fit the climatic, and environmental conditions of the Middle East.
Total prizes for the two rounds of the competition are worth AED20 million.
