The UAE has participated in the 8th session of the Implementation Review Group of the United Nations Convention against Corruption.
In its capacity as party to the convention, the UAE was represented during the meeting by an official delegation of the State Audit Institution, SAI, the central authority that follows up on implementation of the convention in the nation.
The meetings occasioned a review of an array of significant issues of close relevance to the convention. During the meeting, the UAE was selected to participate in the process of reviewing the implementation of the convention in the fourth year of the second review cycle, which will usher in the beginning of the 10th session of the Implementation Review Group in 2019. The convention General Secretariat has commended the UAE’s efforts in support of the mechanism adopted in reviewing the implementation of the convention.
Dr. Harib Al Amimi, President of SAI, has underlined the importance of strengthening global collaboration to combat corruption, affirming the UAE government’s commitment to corporate governance, transparency and accountability.
The convention is the first legally binding universal anti-corruption instrument and its far-reaching approach and the mandatory character of many of its provisions makes it a unique tool for developing a comprehensive response to a global problem, he noted.
The agreement covers five main areas: preventive measures, criminalization and law enforcement, international cooperation, asset recovery, and technical assistance and information exchange.
It also covers many different forms of corruption, including bribery, trading in influence, abuse of functions, and various acts of corruption in the private sector.
