A stabbing attack in which three people died in a park in the English town of Reading is now being investigated as an act of terrorism, UK police said.
The attack happened at Forbury Gardens in Reading, about 40 miles west of London. In addition to those killed, three people sustained serious injuries. Eyewitnesses told how a man approached a group of people in the park and stabbed at them.
“Counter Terrorism Policing can now confirm that the stabbing incident that happened in Reading, has now been declared a terrorist incident,†police said in a statement posted on the Thames Valley Police website. A 25-year-old local man arrested on suspicion of murder remains in police custody, according to the statement. Officers from Counter Terrorism Policing South East will be taking over the investigation.
The suspect is of Libyan extraction, a UK security official said. PM Boris Johnson held a meeting with security officials, police and senior ministers in Downing Street, where he was updated on the investigation, his spokesman said.
