The UAE will participate in the United Nations Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, ‘UNISPACE +50’, in the Austrian capital, Vienna, which will be held between June 18-21.
The country will participate through a high level delegation from the UAE Space Agency, led by Dr Ahmad bin Abdullah Humaid Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of State for Higher Education and Advanced Skills Affairs and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Agency, and Dr. Mohammed Nasser Al Ahbabi, Director-General of the Agency.
The conference aims to identify the role and future of the UN Committee for the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, in line with the UN’s Sustainable
Development Goals 2030.
Dr. Al Falasi will deliver the official UAE speech during the conference, which will highlight the importance of the space sector and its development over the past 50 years.
Dr. Al Ahbabi will participate in a session involving leaders of international space agencies, where he will emphasise the importance of international cooperation in space exploration and the peaceful uses of outer space. He will also deliver the opening speech during a special session, titled, ‘My Planet, My Future.’
Hamda Al Shehhi, Representative of the Space Missions Administration at the Agency, will participate in a special youth session, where she will discuss the changing environment of outer space. The agency will also participate in the country’s pavilion at the exhibition associated with the conference, which will be held from June 18-23, and will involve relevant Emirati companies, to showcase the UAE’s space sector and its current and future projects.
The agency will then host a social event, in cooperation with the UAE diplomatic mission in Vienna, which aims to strengthen its cooperation with various
ambassadors, members of the UN committee, and leaders of international space agencies.
The UAE’s hosting of the introductory forums of the conference reflects its stature in the global space sector, and its role in shaping the future of space exploration with the international community, as well as its commitment to the Dubai Declaration issued in 2017, whose outcomes are part of the general framework of the sector’s plans and the UN’s 2030 goals, Dr. Al Ahbabi said in conclusion.
