DUBAI / WAM

The UAE, represented by a delegation from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), participated in the first preparatory meeting for the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) 2024-2025, held recently in Geneva, under the Chairship of Colombia, in collaboration with France.
In his remarks at the GFMD Steering Committee meeting, Ambassador Jamal Al Musharakh, UAE’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva and Head of the UAE delegation to this global dialogue, asserted the UAE’s commitment to supporting the forum’s efforts, underlining the importance of shared responsibility in addressing migration challenges.
“The UAE fully supports Colombia’s vision for its Chairship of the GFMD for the 2024-2025 term, which reflects the forum’s firm commitment to strengthening international migration governance policies, fostering constructive dialogue on migration and development, and promoting an inclusive and effective approach to advancing the wellbeing of communities worldwide,” he added. Represented by the MoHRE, the UAE has been actively participating in the forum’s activities since 2008, assuming the Chairship in 2020, driven by a firm vision for enhancing cooperation between governments on labour mobility.
The preparatory meeting discussed challenges and opportunities associated with regular migration and temporary labour mobility as pillars of development and community wellbeing, in addition to other key topics for 2024-2025, including women’s impact on global migration and development, the interaction between media and culture and their part in reorienting the global narrative on migration towards its developmental role.
Participants in the meeting also explored opportunities for enhancing regional cooperation to ensure safe and orderly migration targeted towards development, emphasising the need for improving migration management, migration pathways and other related topics.
The meeting in Geneva marks the first of three preparatory meetings scheduled as part of the GFMD 2024-2025 agenda, paving the way for continued discussions on shared migration challenges, innovative solutions, and sustainable policies that support international development. The takeaways from this meeting will serve as a basis for preparing the documents and working papers that will be addressed in the 15th GFMD Summit.
This engagement aligns closely with the Abu Dhabi Dialogue, a leading regional platform for communication between labour-sending and receiving countries in the Asia corridor, focusing on best practices to support bilateral and regional cooperation and partnerships that strive to regulate labour markets in the region.
It promotes the exchange of innovative initiatives to improve workers’ wellbeing amid a thriving business community, while maximising benefits for from labour mobility in the corridor for member states’ economies.
