The Ministry of Economy on Monday shared the results of a recent study showing that the UAE consumed 422,000 tons of poultry meat at a cost of AED 3.2 billion in 2014. The findings are based on official data on domestic production and foreign trade of poultry meat.
According to the study, UAE imports of poultry meat in 2015 amounted to AED2.977bn, growing 5.9% over 2014. Exports, on the other hand, stood at nearly AED40.92mn, while re-exports were worth AED79.5mn.
The study was prepared by the Ministry’s Department of Analysis, Commercial and Industrial Information. Domestic production was found to account for only 11% of the total consumption for 2014. A total of 24 poultry farms produced approximately 52,000 tons worth almost AED 592mn for the year.
Results showed that the UAE gave great importance to the agricultural sector as it provides sufficient amounts of food to meet local needs, maintain food security, and support economic diversification. Based on current prices, the agricultural sector formed 1 per cent of the UAE’s non-oil GDP in 2014. The study revealed Brazil as a major source for poultry meat in 2015, accounting for 71.5% of UAE’s imports.
