Turkish police killed five alleged IS suspects in a raid on a safe house and detained more than 70 others across a nation which has been drawn into the war with the extremists in neighboring Syria.
Police seized AK-47 rifles, a gun and a large quantity of ammunition after the shootout in the central city of Konya on Wednesday, state-run Anadolu Agency said. The operation left four Turkish police officers slightly wounded, it said. Security along routes used by military personnel in the area was tightened after the incident.
In a related crackdown across Turkey, police detained 78 alleged IS suspects, including six Iraqi nationals, including in the cities of Izmir, Hatay and Van, the agency said. Turkey has been fighting IS as part of the international coalition, and sent Turkish soldiers into Syria to drive the group out of the northern town of al-Bab last year. Hundreds of people have been killed in bomb attacks across Turkey and claimed by IS.
