Train collision leaves 200 injured in Kuala Lumpur

Two light rail transit trains collided at an underground section near the famed Petronas twin towers in Kuala Lumpur, injuring more than 200 passengers in a rare mishap that has prompted a full government probe.
No deaths were reported while 47 passengers sustained serious injuries, Bernama cited Dang Wangi District Police chief Mohamad Zainal Abdullah as saying. The collision at the KLCC underground tunnel involved an empty train and another carrying passengers, state-owned rail operator Prasarana Malaysia Bhd said in a statement on Tuesday.
The crash, on the eve of a government move to halve public transport capacity to reduce movement, marks the worst rail incident for Prasarana. That’s prompted Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to order a full
investigation into the mishap.
“We apologise to all Malaysians and our passengers in particular for this untoward incident,” Prasarana Chairman Tajuddin bin Abdul Rahman said in a statement on Tuesday. “We are very saddened by this incident which erased the clean record of the Kelana Jaya LRT which has been operating for 23 years without any such incident. ”

Muhyiddin on his Facebook post said he has instructed the transport ministry and Prasarana Malaysia Bhd. to investigate the cause of this accident, and take strict action immediately. A report is expected to be ready in two weeks, Bernama reported, citing Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong.

Prasarana will provide full cooperation to the transport ministry’s investigation committee and the police, he said. The Kelana Jaya Line LRT service is expected to be fully restored within three days, he added.
