Sheikh Suroor briefed on latest developments in Barakah nuclear plant

His Highness Sheikh Suroor bin Mohammed Al Nahyan visited the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Al Dhafra Region on Wednesday.
Sheikh Suroor was welcomed by Ahmed Mohammed Al Rumaithi, Deputy CEO of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, ENEC, and several of the plant’s employees.
At the start of his tour, Sheikh Suroor was briefed about the latest developments in the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Programme and the plant’s construction progress and operational readiness, with an emphasis on the role of UAE nationals in completing this historic project.
He was also briefed about several of ENEC’s programmes which aim to protect the environment and realise the best use of available resources.
Sheikh Suroor said that the UAE’s efforts to achieve environmental sustainability of its national resources and employ clean and renewable energy have promoted its international position as a leading country in this area.
He added that the plant will help to fulfil the UAE’s voluntary commitments to the Paris Agreement, through the UAE Energy Strategy, which aims to diversify the country’s sources of energy by raising the level of use of clean and renewable energy to 27 percent by 2021 and 50 percent by 2050.
Mohammed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, CEO of ENEC, welcomed the visit of Sheikh Suroor, which reflects the support of the UAE leadership for the country’s peaceful nuclear energy programme while adding that the plant will help to achieve the economic and social growth of both the country and Al Dhafra Region, by providing safe, reliable and environment-friendly energy and job opportunities, as well as supporting infrastructure development.
Sheikh Suroor was accompanied by Ahmed Mattar Al Dhaheri, Director of the Ruler’s Representative’s Office in Al Dhafra Region.
