Twelve people have been arrested in southern Saudi Arabia on suspicion of belonging to a Yemeni rebel group fighting the kingdom, a newspaper reported on Thursday. They were detained during a wide-ranging crackdown in the border region of Najran, Al-Riyadh newspaper said.
“The campaign also resulted in the arrest of 12 Yemenis suspected of belonging to the Huthis,” it said. Yemenis have traditionally been by far the largest contingent of illegal immigrants in Saudi Arabia.
Since March last year the kingdom has led an Arab military coalition supporting Yemen’s government against Shiite Houthi rebels and their allies, who seized the capital Sanaa and other parts of the country. The rebels have retaliated against Saudi Arabia, which has sent troops and heavy weapons to its frontier.
At least 110 Saudi soldiers and civilians have been killed in the southern border region, either in rebel rocket fire or armed clashes.
