HH Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, inaugurated the Parliamentary Digital Library of the Federal National Council (FNC) at the Council’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi, in the presence of Dr. Amal Abdullah Al Qubaisi, Speaker of the Federal National Council, and Dr. Mohammed Salem Al Mazroui, Secretary-General of the Council.
The inauguration of the library comes within the framework of the Reading Initiative, 2016, which was launched by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Dr. Al Qubaisi said that that parliamentary libraries are an essential part of the knowledge system, serving primarily parliamentarians, researchers and specialists, and contribute to provide knowledge’s support for them by preserving all documents of parliament and its sessions. She said that everyone needs encouragement to read, a habit which has been neglected in recent years as a result of engagement with modern technology and means of electronic communication.
Dr. Al Qubasi commended the directives of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa to begin the legislative procedure of drafting a UAE National Reading Law, which aims to ensure the sustainability of all government efforts to consolidate reading in the UAE for all ages, as well as identify the key responsibilities of government agencies in the field, saying that the law will consolidate reading for all members of community.
