Runaway train ‘derailed’ by BHP in Australia

BHP Billiton Ltd., the world’s largest mining company, halted all train operations in Western Australia on Monday after it was forced to derail a runaway train in the Pilbara.
The driver was inspecting an issue with the train when the locomotive ran away. While rail operations are suspended, mining operations continue, it said. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said the train traveled for 92 kilometres and then was deliberately derailed at a set of points about 119 kilometres from Port Hedland. The loaded train consisted of four locomotives and 268 wagons.
BHP has more than 1,000 kilometres of rail infrastructure in the ore-rich Pilbara. It reported reliability issues with port car dumpers. BHP’s Western Australian operations include five mines and four processing hubs, including joint ventures with Mitsui & Co. and Itochu Corp.
