Renew national commitment to protect natural resources, says Al Tayer

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) said that International Environment Day is an opportunity for everyone to realise their responsibility to protect the earth, and renew our national commitment to protecting our natural resources, by rationalising our usage, and contributing to achieving sustainability by addressing the issue of climate change. He noted, “DEWA believes that environmental preservation is a matter of teamwork, and requires a combination of efforts to achieve a balance between development and sustainability. DEWA’s plans adhere to the vision of Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who understands that investing in clean and renewable energy resources has positive long-term effects.
DEWA’s ongoing efforts and projects contribute to achieving the UAE Vision 2021 to make the UAE one of the greatest countries in the world by 2021, and enhance the Emirate’s position in terms of competitiveness, with a focus on renewable energy and green economy products and techniques. DEWA cooperates with different local, regional, and international organisations to achieve sustainability, and invest in natural resources to achieve development, limit pollution, and protect natural resources while developing them. This embodies the essence of sustainable development, along with its objectives.”
He reaffirmed, “We are working to carry out the directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid by diversifying the energy mix and expanding our share of renewable and clean energy, as well as reducing carbon emissions. This plays a vital role in transforming Dubai into a city with a clean environment, as part of our strategy to realise the importance of renewable and sustainable energy as a means to protect the environment, and preserve our natural resources, creating a better future for everyone.”
He indicated DEWA’s has been tirelessly working to achieve its strategic sustainability goals to fully meet international environmental standards, complete the ongoing implementation of renewable energy projects, and provide support for research, development, and innovation.
Al Tayer concluded that these have all contributed to DEWA’s long list of awards and achievements. DEWA’s ongoing efforts have contributed to its receiving the Five Star Environmental Audit from the British Safety Council for the 5th year in a row. DEWA’s excellent performance also led to its receiving the Globe of Honour for environment for the first time in the MENA, one of only seven countries around the world to do so. This prestigious award by the British Safety Council is an international recognition of the successful approach, and environmental strategies and policies adopted by DEWA.
