JAKARTA/WAM

His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, emphasised that religions are a message of peace, and described Islam as a unifying force among civilisations, citing its historical role in fostering human brotherhood.
The remarks were delivered at a reception hosted by the Indonesian Nahdlatul Ulama Association, the world’s largest Islamic organisation, for the Gran Imam of Al-Azhar. The event drew leaders from diverse religious backgrounds, including Catholics, Protestants, Buddhists, Hindus, and Confucians, alongside thousands of association members and attendees, with hundreds of thousands more following online.
Speaking at the event titled “Dialogue and Harmony between Religions and Civilisations” Dr. Al-Tayeb stated that religions convey a message of peace to humanity, animals, plants, and nature as a whole. Islam permits fighting solely in defence of self, land, and nation. He emphasised Islam’s stance of friendship and humanitarian brotherhood towards non-Muslims, supported by explicit Quranic verses advocating kindness, justice, and fairness.
Highlighting Islam’s historical contributions to global fellowship and civilisation without hostility towards other faiths, Dr. Al-Tayeb called for closer East-West ties, viewing Western civilisation optimistically for its advancements in science and technology.
In response, religious leaders welcomed the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, praising his efforts in promoting values of truth, goodness, justice, and human brotherhood, fostering peace, coexistence, and citizenship.
Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas hailed Sheikh Al-Tayeb’s visit as significant, reflecting the deep respect and affection he commands among Indonesians.
Representatives from Buddhism, Protestantism, Hinduism and Catholics expressed gratitude for Sheikh Al-Tayeb’s visit, highlighting its broader significance for Indonesian society in promoting peace and mutual respect.
The event concluded with the Indonesian Nahdlatul Ulama Association presenting Sheikh Al-Tayeb with the “Nahdlatul Ulama Shield”, expressing the Indonesian people’s love for him and their happiness with this esteemed visit.
