There once was a time when dress codes ruled the street, but those fashion rules have relaxed over recent decades. Among the few places where you can still experience an old-style dress code is at a conservative golf club.
“There’s no room for a tank top on a European golf course,” says stylist Sylvia Ebner. Very short skirts and trousers are also taboo.
Players dress to achieve a casual but smart look. Men is T-shirts risk being thrown off the course.
“A top with a collar is often required,” says Ebner.
“Golf fashion has gotten a little fresher and more modern,” she adds. And it can be said that the latest trends in golf attire include more colour and different patterns instead of the usual check and Argyle.
But conservative golf clubs still hold to their dress codes. Women must often wear a skirt or shorts that end a maximum of four inches above the knee. The typical golfing outfit is a polo shirt and Bermuda shorts.
Denim jeans are a no-no when playing golf. For Ebner, that’s because jeans are not hipster-wear, but associated with manual labour, which upper-class members of conservative golf clubs don’t engage in.
Ebner says there’s also a practical reason for not wearing denim: jeans don’t supply much room to move in. Freedom of movement is essential to get a golf swing right.
Ebner recommends wearing clothing made from breathable fabrics that screen you from the sun.
