The 5th Nad Al Sheba Sports Tournament was launched by HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation, at the NAS Sports Complex, with the first two preliminary round matches of the volleyball competition held late in the day.
“Unlimited Capabilities” is the theme of the 2017 tournament, being held from May 28 to June 17 under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, who attended the opening ceremony. It is one of the richest events organised during the month of Ramadan in the UAE with more than AED6 million in prize money.
The tournament attracts athletes from several countries, whether able-bodied or physically challenged, to compete in exciting matches of paddle tennis, archery, volleyball, running, goalball, wheelchair basketball, cycling and road races.
This year, three new sporting disciplines — fencing, a fitness challenge and football for the hearing impaired — have been added to the tournament.
