Japan’s Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura urged residents to further limit contact with other people and warned it could take up to three months to contain the spread of coronavirus unless social distancing was followed more strictly, according to Nikkei.
Japanese residents need to reduce contact with other people by 80% to contain the spread of the virus, Nikkei cited Nishimura as saying.
The minister said data from mobile phones and train-passenger information suggested inter-person contact had generally been cut by only 50% to 60%, the newspaper said.
He said the spread of the virus in Japan could not be contained unless there was more stringent social distancing, the Nikkei reported.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe declared a month-long emergency on Tuesday in Tokyo and six other prefectures,
representing about half of Japan’s economy.
There were 197 new coronavirus cases in Tokyo on Saturday, the highest daily tally so far, Kyodo News reported.
