A Hong Kong police officer drew a weapon after coming under attack at a rally in Hong Kong city center.
The clash occurred during a gathering of hundreds of people at Edinburgh Place in support of China’s Uighur minority. Police stormed the rally after a Chinese flag was ripped off a pole near City Hall. Police said in a statement that when they tried to arrest someone, protesters hurled objects at them and one person tried to snatch an officer’s gun.
Hong Kong has endured more than six months of angry clashes between protesters and police. The unrest, ignited by a proposed extradition law to allow fugitives in Hong Kong to be sent to places including China to stand trial, has killed off any economic momentum, with the city entering its first recession in a decade. The protests have persisted with more demands after the bill was withdrawn.
The human rights rally for China’s Uighur minority at a square near the waterfront in the city center that started off peacefully turned violent as protesters clashed with riot police.
At least one person was pinned to the ground by police, who also fought off demonstrators with batons. What appeared to be pepper spray was also used to disperse a crowd that was pushing back law enforcement officers. One of the speeches at the square near the waterfront called for the people in Hong Kong to stand up for their own culture and identity.
