Estonia’s top diplomat called for the “complete isolation†of Russia’s financial system and an oil-price cap that would cripple the nation’s energy producers, extending punitive measures to cover the whole economy.
Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu, who has been among the most outspoken EU officials in calling for the bloc to help Ukraine defend itself against the invasion, said the EU needed to go much further in providing Kyiv with weapons and funding — and isolating Moscow.
“Step by step we have moved towards isolating Russia,†Reinsalu said. “Has it been enough? No, it has not been enough, because the war continues.â€
The Estonian minister represents the hawkish end within the EU — as other states have been more cautious since the start of the war. Reinsalu reinforced calls for sanctions across Russia’s banking sector and an oil-price cap of $30 to choke off energy profits.
He also said European
governments face a “fundamental question†on meeting a Ukrainian request to deliver tanks and long-range missiles.
