The Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) signed a medical equipment supply contract for the Ahl Masr Burns Hospital in Cairo as part of the ERC’s initiative announced during the 7th edition of the Zayed Charity Marathon in Alexandria last year. The initiative aims to allocate the event’s proceeds to support the hospital. The contract was signed by Mariam Khalifa Al Kaabi, UAE Ambassador to Egypt, on behalf of the ERC. The signing was attended by Fahad Abdul Rahman bin Sultan, ERC Deputy Secretary-General for International Development and Cooperation, and Dr. Heba El Seweidi, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Hospital.
Before the hospital’s official opening, Al Kaabi toured its various medical departments and stressed that the UAE, since its establishment by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, is keen to prioritise humanitarian work, a cornerstone of its foreign policy. The UAE’s humanitarian initiatives follow an institutional approach, and humanitarian work has been a key priority since its establishment by Sheikh Zayed, she added.
She also highlighted the humanitarian values that inspire the Zayed Charity Marathon, which promotes and encourages sports participation for a noble cause. The proceeds of this year’s marathon will go to the Ahl Masr Burns Hospital, which provides free treatment to burn victims, she further added. Fahad bin Sultan said the ERC has been a major sponsor of the Zayed Charity Marathon since its inception, adding that the event supports humanitarian and development initiatives, most notably in the health sector.
The UAE’s leadership has made the marathon an important event for social development, and the ERC is keen to support Egyptian initiatives in various fields and is working hard to improve and develop them, he added. Dr. El Seweidi expressed her gratitude to the UAE’s leadership, stressing that donating to the hospital sends a noble message of generosity and solidarity. “The Zayed Charity Marathon is more than just a sporting event. It is a vision that embodies how people should care for the good of others and help those in need in various ways. The marathon is significant and effective in providing health assistance for different issues. By donating the proceeds of this edition to the hospital, the marathon shows its impact as a charitable project that supports social causes in many countries. It also urges other entities and organisations to support the cause of burn injuries,” she said.
“The Zayed Charity Marathon is one of the largest sporting events that attracts attention from various communities in many neighbouring and friendly countries, therefore, benefitting burn victims,” she added. Regarding the progress at Ahl Masr Burns Hospital, Dr. Heba affirmed that preparations are diligently progressing with the concerted efforts of the Ahl Masr team. The recruitment of personnel and the nursing team has begun to prepare them for managing and caring for burn cases, with a particular emphasis on initial emergency care, since the critical window for rescuing burn victims is just six hours.
