Dubai Customs’ training center launched a sign language training programme exclusively for customs’ personnel.
This comes in response to the directives of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, and the guidelines of “My Community – A City for Everyone” initiative.
The initiative aims at turning Dubai into a disability-friendly city by the year 2020 through projects and initiatives that promote the participation and inclusion of differently abled persons (people of determination) in the community, eliminating all obstacles that may stand in their way, and positively integrating them in their environments.
In this regard, Dr. Shaikha Al Ghafiri, Acting Director of Dubai Customs’ Training Centre, pointed out that the training programme is supported by Dubai Customs’ senior management and will help provide an attractive environment for people of determination.
The programme, in coordination with the Ministry of Community Development, will enable Dubai Customs employees to better communicate with hard of hearing clients and employees. There will be sign language translators as well to help deliver customs services faster and in a more efficient way. The programme included training on 50 different ‘signs’ that fit with customs work.
