Canadian Natural Resources Ltd., the nation’s largest heavy-oil producer, was fined C$500,000 ($384,500) for breaching environmental laws in 2010 and 2012.
The company was penalized C$350,000 for an incident on May 28, 2010, at its Horizon facility when the plant’s sulfur-recovery unit failed and hydrogen sulfide escaped, the Alberta government said in a statement Friday. It had reported the breach on June 3 of that year, according to the statement. Another fine of C$150,000 was imposed for a separate incident in August 2012 that also resulted from a failure of the plant’s sulfur-recovery unit.
About C$425,000 of the fine will be paid to researchers at the University of Calgary, it said.
