Belgium has nominated Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib as the Belgian Commissioner in the upcoming European Commission.
This decision was conveyed in a letter from Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
The European Commission comprises the current President, who is from Germany, and 26 Commissioners representing the other member states.
Minister Hadja Lahbib will succeed the outgoing Belgian Commissioner, Didier Reynders, who is responsible for justice affairs.
The President of the Commission is currently assigning portfolios to the incoming members of the European executive body before they appear before the Members of the European Parliament.
The new European Commission is expected to commence its duties at the beginning of November, following approval from the parliamentarians.
