Google has announced the distribution of the definitive version of its new operating system Android Nougat. Initially, all of the handsets that participated in Google’s Android beta program will be updated with the final version of Android 7.0. Thereafter, Android Nougat will be rolled out to the Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, Nexus Player, and Pixel C as well units from the low-cost Android One range.
Manufacturers of devices running Android are expected to rapidly publish schedules for their updates, although it is worth noting that smartphones and tablets that make use of an in-house user interface layer (as is the case with Samsung products) are not expected to run Android Nougat before 2017.
The LG V20, which is expected to launch in September, will be the first model to ship with Android Nougat, followed naturally by the new Nexus models. These are rumored to include two new 5-inch smartphones from HTC (codenamed Sailfish and Marlin) and a larger handset from Huawei in a similar style to the current 6P. However, no information has been released on their future availability.
Presented in May 2016 at the Google I/0 conference, the latest version of Android is packed with new features. Most notably, it will be equipped with a module to combat viruses. Android Nougat will analyze handsets whenever they are powered on and will have the capability to prevent them from booting or to restrict them to a limited-use mode if viruses are detected. Android Nougat will also feature a multi-window mode that will enable users to simultaneously view two applications side by side (on tablets) or superimposed over each other (smartphones): a long-awaited functionality that has already been provided on certain Samsung and LG products, and by competing iOS and Windows systems.
