The Khalifa University of Science and Technology has on Tuesday announced that Abu Dhabi will host the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Global Communications Conference (Globecom) 2018, the world’s largest telecommunications research conference.
The announcement was made during a press conference organized at the campus. To be held from December 9-13, 2018 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC), Globecom 2018 will be themed ‘Gateway to a Connected World’. The conference is expected to attract more than 2,000 specialists, engineers and researchers in information and communication technology.
Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi, President of the Globecom Conference, Dr. Mohammed Al Mualla, Co-Chair, Dr. Bayan Sharif, CEO, and Sayed Al Hashmi Media Chair, attended the press conference.
IEEE Globecom is one of two flagship conferences of the IEEE Communications Society, together with IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC). Each year, the conference attracts over 3,000 submitted scientific papers. After extensive peer review, the best of the proposals are selected for the conference program, which includes technical papers, tutorials, workshops and industry sessions.
Based on previous editions of the event, around 1,000 papers are expected to be accepted and presented during the conference. The event will include eight tutorials, eight workshops, nine technical sessions, nine industry sessions, three keynote speeches, as well as parallel exhibition and networking opportunities.
The conference will discuss a wide range of topics including networks communications, information systems security, knowledge networks and radios, reliability of communication services, modeling, communication theories, communications software, multimedia services and applications, environment-friendly communications systems and networks, mobile networks, next generation networks, optical network systems, signal processing and many other topics in communications.
Commenting on Abu Dhabi’s choice for the conference, Dr Arif Al Hammadi said: “We are honored that Abu Dhabi has become the first Arab city in the Middle East to host a world-class conference such as Globecom. The event comes as a result of Abu Dhabi’s years of experience and success in organizing and hosting international conferences in various engineering fields. Science and technology play a key role in the field of communications engineering which qualifies Khalifa University to be a partner to this conference.”
Dr. Al Hammadi added: “We believe the conference will serve as a platform for students and researchers in the university and the country in particular, and in the region and the world in general, paving the way for breakthrough innovation in this vital sector. This conference will further strengthen the country’s position in the global communications innovation map as it will host the largest gathering of the brightest minds in telecommunications.”
“The hosting of a conference of the size of Globecom in the UAE is an indication of the quality of the infrastructure the country enjoys and the reputation it has earned both at the service level and in education and research,” said Dr. Mohammed Al-Mualla. “Creating an innovation ecosystem for our students and researchers, the conference will be a meeting point with the world’s best researchers in the vital and dynamic sector such as communications engineering. It will motivate more students to take up scientific and engineering subjects, which remains one of our most important near-term objectives.”
