Curtains down on SLC’s art experiment, ‘identity’

‘Identity’, the Sharjah Ladies Club (SLC) art exhibition concluded this week. Organised by the Collage Talent Centre, SLC’s hive of creativity and learning, the showcase featured a collection of crafts and artwork imbued with the spontaneity and creative personalities of the Talent Centre’s young female artists aged 6 years and above.
The exhibited artworks featured a collection of drawings and paintings including redoing parts of the original paintings on small stones. Using their skills of sewing, needlework, knitting and embroidery, the little girls made stoles, scarves, wool hats and other handicrafts that reflected nuanced artistic techniques and styles.
The seven-day exhibit that started on the 22 of November attracted a large footfall comprising the general public and SLC members accompanied by their children. The exhibited works were characterised by unique aesthetics, which reflected the young artists’ personal and national identities and also tied in distinctive elements of UAE’s heritage. The artworks explored details of everyday life, which took shape in characters, cartoons and modern elements form the artists’ local environments.
Shaikha Al Suwaidi, Assistant manager of Collage Talent Centre, said; “The first edition of ‘Identity’ student art exhibition achieved its objective in showcasing the artistic excellence of our young participants. The girls scored equally on both quality as well as quantity of their works. In its debut, the event has also attracted several departments and institutions, who have expressed their willingness in collaborating with us and participating in our next edition, to extend their support and encouragement to our talented young girls.”
Al Suwaidi stressed that SLC and Collage Talent Centre are committed to envisioning and organising events and activities that will challenge the creative capacities of SLC’s visitors and members, honing their skills. She pointed out that SLC will continue to develop the exhibition for future editions, and hold an open day with the purpose of discovering and supporting more young talents.
Established in 1982, SLC – a subsidiary of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs that is chaired by Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of the Ruler of Sharjah – is dedicated to facilitating leisure and educational activities for women and children, providing them with a relaxed and nurturing place where they can learn, enjoy sports and cultivate their favourite hobbies. The club organises events that relate to society, art, health and charity, with its activities including bazaars, exhibitions, sporting events, seminars, workshops and forums.
