The company that made its name by building cases for iPhones that double as battery packs is launching a new range of devices that will power and recharge any smartphone, past, present or future.
Every year smartphones get smarter and faster and thanks to technological convergence, they’re also getting bigger in terms of display as they continue to double for tablets or even notebooks. However, unless consumers are prepared to carry around devices that are as thick as the screens are large, battery life is going to continue to be the mobile device’s Achilles heel and the most frustrating issue of digital life.
“From software to hardware, developments in mobile tech happen daily,” said Shawn Dougherty, Co-Founder and President of Mophie. “The one remaining constant is anxiety over keeping our devices powered. Today, this affects more people than ever.”
So the new Powerstation USB C battery pack offers, as the name suggests, a super-fast USB type C connector as well as a USB A port, meaning that it will conceivably support any smartphone on sale and any device planned for the future. It offers a 10,000 mAh capacity which means it should be able to recharge a typical smartphone at least three times before it needs recharging too. And because it’s a USB device, it will be able to top up tablets and action cams too. Lightweight thanks to an aluminum casing, it will retail for $99.95.
For those serious power users less worried about future compatibility and more concerned about never being out of the digital loop, Mophie has also overhauled its existing range of Powerstation battery packs with a new 20,000 mAh XXL model — the biggest it’s ever offered — that will support an Apple or Android handset and should be good for eight full recharges and could conceivably top up a full-size tablet twice
instead. It’s available in space gray or in rose gold, and because it comes with three USB ports it can charge a number of devices simultaneously.
At the other end of the scale is the Powerstation Mini that’s slim enough to keep in the same pocket as a smartphone yet its 3000 mAh capacity should be enough to offer a further 11-12 hours of battery life. The updated Powerstation range, which also includes an L and XL model, will retail from $29.99.
