UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson was discharged from hospital after a week, including three days in intensive care as he battled coronavirus.
“On the advice of his medical team, the PM will not be immediately returning to work,†Johnson’s office said on Sunday. The premier will continue his recovery at his country retreat, Chequers.
Johnson was taken to the hospital last Sunday after failing to shake off the cough and fever he’d been suffering from for 10 days. He was put into intensive care the following day and was given oxygen to help with his breathing.
He remained there until Thursday before being transferred back to an ordinary ward. There were times last week that were very dark indeed. My heart goes out to all those in similar situations, worried sick about their loved ones.
The premier on April 11 thanked hospital staff for saving his life, saying: “I can’t thank them enough. I owe them my life.†That message was reiterated on Sunday, with his office saying he wished to thank everyone at St. Thomas’s Hospital in central London “for the brilliant care he has received.â€
In Johnson’s absence, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has deputised for the prime minister.
