United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) has recently increased its number of patent registrations to date to more than 300 in 2025, continuing its leadership in research and innovation.
The achievement reflects the university’s commitment to promoting a culture of innovation and supporting applied research with economic and social impact. The diversity of patents spans advanced technologies in biology, engineering, artificial intelligence, medical technologies, energy, and the environment, showcasing the efforts by researchers across the university in a spectrum of disciplines.
Dr Rami Beiram, Associate Provost for Research at UAEU, said: “UAEU believes that innovation is the cornerstone of a bright, knowledge- and technology-based future. From this perspective, the university seeks to expand its research system, enhance partnerships with universities, research institutions, and industry centers globally. This includes exploring advanced sectors such as AI, sustainability, food security, and health security. As part of its vision, UAEU aims to strengthen its patent portfolio by supporting advanced research, providing innovation incentives, and promoting international cooperation that leads to impactful technological advancement. This includes offering specialized training workshops and facilitating patent registration and marketing, to enhance its active contribution to the national economic development.
“These achievements are the direct result of the comprehensive research environment provided by the university — through specialized research centers, funding for high-impact research projects, and international collaboration with leading academic and industry institutions. This qualitative achievement reflects the university’s commitment to advancing the UAE’s national vision of shaping a knowledge-based economy by supporting researchers and encouraging them to develop scientific and technological solutions to address local and global challenges. This aligns with the national strategy for advanced innovation, which places research at the heart of sustainable development.”
The UAEU’s global standing in terms of the number of US granted patents grew to prominence in 2021, when the university was ranked among the top 100 universities worldwide, achieving 90th place globally, according to a joint report by the National Academy of Inventors and the United States Intellectual Property Alliance (USIPA). This ranking cemented UAEU’s role as a leading scientific institution supporting research and development across the Arab region and the Middle East.
In 2025, the university has continued its research achievements, increasing the number of its registered patents specifically to 303 patents across various scientific sectors, with a focus on transforming research outcomes into practical applications that benefit society. UAEU’s patents span a wide range of academic disciplines and align closely with national strategic priorities, including renewable energy, medical and health sciences, space science and technology, artificial intelligence, material science, and manufacturing.
A significant number of these patents come from the College of Engineering, reflecting its strong focus on innovation and applied research. Other colleges, such as the College of Science, College of Information Technology, and the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, also actively contribute through patents in biotechnology, material sciences, and advanced medical care solutions.
The university’s support for diverse specialisations has led to patents that integrate expertise from multiple disciplines, such as AI-supported medical devices, smart energy management systems, and sustainable building materials. Through initiatives like innovation centers, research hubs, and industry partnerships, UAEU continues to foster a strong culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among its students and faculty.
