New York sued the Trump administration over its plan to bar state residents from enrolling in the federal government Trusted Traveler programs like Global Entry, which allow pre-screened participants to breeze through airport passport and customs checks.
The lawsuit against the US Department of Homeland Security was filed in federal court in Manhattan by New York Attorney General Letitia James, who said last week she intended to challenge the new policy.
According to James and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, President Donald Trump is seeking to punish the state for opposing many of his policies targeting immigrants.
Acting Deputy Homeland Security Secretary Ken Cucinelli announced the policy last week, saying it was in response to a new state law allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain New York driver’s while shielding their information from federal authorities.
According to Cucinelli, the new law prevents the federal government from accessing data it needs to properly screen Trusted Traveler applicants from New York.
